the system at a glance

A brass bar heated at one end and cooled at the other, with thermocouples along its length. At steady state the temperature drops linearly through each section, and the slope plus the known heat flow gives thermal conductivity through Fourier’s law.

We fitted lines to the heated, intermediate and cooled sections at the same heat input and compared the conductivity calculated from each.
